JAMB Subject Combination for All Courses in Nigerian Universities (2026/2027)

JAMB Subject Combination for All Courses in Nigerian Universities (2026/2027)

Choosing the wrong JAMB subject combination is one of the most painful mistakes a candidate can make. Every year, thousands of students score well above cut-off but lose admission because they sat for the wrong subjects. This guide gives you the correct combination for every major course, plus what to do if your school did not offer a subject you need.

How JAMB Subject Combinations Work

Every UTME candidate sits for four subjects. Use of English is compulsory for everyone. The remaining three subjects depend on the course you want to study. Universities publish their exact requirements in the JAMB brochure, and while most courses follow a standard pattern, some universities have specific variations, so always confirm with your chosen institution.

Combinations by Faculty

Sciences and Medical Sciences

The science combination is built around Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics. Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiology, and Anatomy all require English + Physics + Chemistry + Biology. Pure sciences like Microbiology and Biochemistry follow the same pattern.

Engineering and Technology

All engineering courses require English + Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry. Computer Science typically takes English + Mathematics + Physics plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Economics, or Geography depending on the university.

Arts and Humanities

Law requires English + Literature in English + Government (or CRS/IRS/History depending on the university). Mass Communication takes English + Literature + Government or Economics. English and Literary Studies requires Literature in English as a must.

Social and Management Sciences

Economics requires English + Mathematics + Economics + one other social science subject. Accounting takes English + Mathematics + Economics + Commerce or Government. Political Science, Sociology, and International Relations take English + Government + Economics or another social science subject.

What If Your School Did Not Offer a Required Subject?

You can register for WAEC GCE or NECO as a private candidate to cover a missing O-Level subject, but for JAMB itself you simply select the required subjects during registration and prepare for them independently. Some universities also allow limited substitutions, for example History in place of Government. Check the JAMB brochure entry for your specific course and university before assuming.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Choosing subjects you are weak in when the brochure allows a stronger alternative.
  2. Assuming all universities accept the same combination. The brochure lists university-specific requirements for a reason.
  3. Forgetting O-Level requirements. Your WAEC/NECO subjects must also match the course, including credits in English and Mathematics for most courses.
  4. Changing course after registration without checking subjects. A change of course can silently invalidate your combination.
