JAMB CBT Practice: How to Score 300+ in UTME 2026

JAMB CBT Practice: How to Score 300+ in UTME 2026

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME) is the gateway to university education in Nigeria. With nearly 2 million candidates sitting each year, scoring 300 or above puts you in the top tier and gives you the best chance at your dream course and institution. This guide gives you the exact strategy to get there.

Understanding the UTME Format

The UTME is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) consisting of 4 subjects: Use of English (compulsory) plus 3 subjects relevant to your chosen course. Each subject has 60 questions to be answered in a combined time of 2 hours (120 minutes). That gives you roughly 30 minutes per subject or 30 seconds per question.

The maximum score is 400. Scoring 300+ means getting at least 75% of all questions correct. This is achievable with consistent, strategic preparation. The key word is strategic. Working hard on the wrong things will not get you to 300.

Choosing the Right Subject Combination

Your subject combination must match the requirements of your desired course and institution. For Medicine, you need Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. For Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. For Law, Literature, Government, and one other arts or social science subject. Get this wrong and your score, no matter how high, will not gain you admission.

Choose subjects you are genuinely strong in. If you are deciding between two valid combinations, pick the one where you consistently score higher in practice tests. A 300 in subjects you are confident in is better than a 250 in subjects you chose because they sound more impressive.

The 60-Day JAMB Study Schedule

Days 1-20: Content Review. Go through the JAMB syllabus topic by topic. The syllabus is free on the JAMB website. For each topic, read your textbook, watch explanation videos if needed, and make concise notes. Do not try to memorize everything. Focus on understanding concepts.

Days 21-45: Intensive Question Practice. This is the most important phase. Practice at least 100 questions per day across all 4 subjects. Use Safeticha Practice to generate unlimited CBT-style questions. The AI adapts to your level, getting harder as you improve and focusing on topics where you are weakest.

Days 46-60: Mock Exams and Review. Take a full 4-subject mock exam every 2 days. Time yourself strictly to 2 hours. After each mock, review every wrong answer. In the final week, focus only on your weak areas and do light review of your strong subjects.

Why CBT Practice on a Screen Matters

Many students prepare with paper-based past questions and then freeze when they sit in front of a computer on exam day. The CBT environment is different: you navigate with a mouse, questions appear one at a time, and you can flag questions to return to later. If you have never practiced in this format, you will lose time to confusion and anxiety.

Safeticha Practice simulates the CBT experience on your phone or computer. You see questions one at a time, select answers, and work against a timer. The more you practice in this format, the more natural it feels on exam day. This alone can add 20-30 points to your score by eliminating test anxiety.

Top 10 Most-Tested JAMB Topics

JAMB does not test every topic equally. Some topics appear in nearly every exam. Focus your energy on these high-frequency areas:

  1. Use of English: Comprehension passages, Lexis and Structure (synonyms, antonyms, fill-in-the-blank), Oral English (vowels, consonants, stress patterns)
  2. Mathematics: Algebra (equations, inequalities, logarithms), Geometry (angles, circles, mensuration), Statistics and Probability
  3. Physics: Mechanics (motion, Newton's laws), Electricity (Ohm's law, circuits), Waves and Optics
  4. Chemistry: Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Acids/Bases/Salts, Organic Chemistry basics
  5. Biology: Cell Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Evolution, Human Physiology

These topics alone account for 60-70% of questions in their respective subjects. Master them first before moving to less frequently tested material.

How Safeticha AI Makes JAMB Prep Smarter

Traditional JAMB prep means buying the same past question booklets everyone else uses and solving the same 500 questions repeatedly. Safeticha takes a different approach. The AI generates fresh JAMB-style questions every time you practice. You never run out of new questions to solve.

After each question, the AI provides a detailed explanation showing not just why the correct answer is right, but why each wrong option is wrong. This deepens your understanding instead of just testing your memory. The system also tracks your accuracy per topic over time, so you can see exactly which areas are improving and which still need work.

Exam Day Tips

  • Arrive early. JAMB centres can be chaotic. Arriving 2 hours early gives you time to settle, find your seat, and verify your biometrics without panic.
  • Manage your time. You have roughly 30 seconds per question. If a question is taking more than 45 seconds, flag it and move on. Come back to flagged questions at the end.
  • Start with your strongest subject. Building early confidence improves performance on subsequent subjects.
  • Read every option. Many students select the first option that looks correct without reading all four. JAMB loves options that are partially correct. Read all four before choosing.
  • Never leave a question blank. There is no negative marking. A guess has a 25% chance of being correct. A blank answer has a 0% chance.
